Chapter Eleven

Noel

“How long are you going to string me along?” I ask Asher.

He’s across the table from me in the lifeguard lounge, and when he glances up from his phone, the smug look on his face says he knows exactly what I’m talking about. It’s been a few weeks since he cashed-in on his favors from Silas and Ainsley after we all left him hanging at the beginning of summer, and I can’t say I love waiting for my turn to roll around.

“You know,” he says, “I don’t hate the idea of having something to hold over you. Maybe I’ll wait to collect until after the season ends. Call you up in NYC and demand you haul your ass to Princeton.”

I chuckle, shaking my head. “Offer expires midseason, pal.”

He shrugs and stands to go back out to the pool. “Midseason. That gives me…what? To the Fourth of July? I’ll come up with something worthy by then.”

I blow out an exaggerated breath, and he grins, flipping me off as he backs out of the lounge to rotate out with Silas. My phone buzzes on the table a minute later, and I glance at the screen, not picking it up.

“Let me guess,” Silas says on his way in. “You’re not answering our best friend’s calls either?”

He drops into the chair beside me. Even though we feel the soft skin and sexy curves multiple times a day, we still pick chairs for the view of Ainsley in the lifeguard chair.

As for the Parker side of things, Silas is one hundred percent correct. I’ve answered a few of Parker’s texts, but I know he’ll ask about Ainsley if I talk to him. The idea of lying to him twists at me. At least with him out of sight, out of mind, I don’t constantly feel like I’m hiding anything from him.

I have no doubt Silas feels as guilty as I do. Not for falling for Ainsley—we fell for her a long fucking time ago. The past few weeks have only proven how deep it goes. We feel like shit because we selfishly want to keep what’s going on with her between us for as long as possible. Keep her all to ourselves without the rest of the world involving itself.

“One of us should probably answer,” I say. “Parker will really think something’s up if we’re both dodging him.”

Silas nods, but when he checks his phone a few seconds later, he lets it fall to the table beside mine. The screen shows Parker’s name, the call vibrating the table top.

Then his eyes slide back to the far side of the pool.

“We’ll answer tomorrow.”

After Fisher and Ainsley finish up his lesson by treading for a few minutes, he shoots out of the pool and speed-walks to the ladder for the slide. She might joke about him being a fish, but the kid puts every other seven-year-old I’ve met to shame in the water.

I’m leaning in the open doorway to the lounge when she hops out of the pool, the water rolling off her toned body.
